Introduction
The Lead Database Engineer will have end-to-end accountability for the DBMS (Database Management Systems) for the Group from strategy, delivery, service lifecycle and production operations. This will require strong technical knowledge on all DBMS, as well as strong leadership skills. The lead is also expected to support the rest of the database engineers in the team as a mentor, coach and escalation report. This position will engage with all other
platforms to monitor, diagnose and resolve database related issues for all Capricorn Group entities.

Strategic contribution:
• Ensuring that overall DBMS Strategy aligns with threat landscape, control objectives, and efficiency goals
• Overseeing activities of the database engineering team, ensuring proper execution of their duties and alignment with business vision and objectives.
• Provides senior-level contribution to a team that is responsible for the design, deployment, and maintenance of the business’s data platforms.
• Owns and extends the business’s data pipeline through the collection, storage, processing, securing and transformation of large data sets.
• Monitor the existing metrics, analyse data, and lead partnership with other Data and Analytics teams in an effort to identify and implement system and process improvements.
• Designs, architects, implements, and supports key datasets that avail structured and timely access to actionable business insights.

• Designs, architects, implements, and supports key datasets that avail structured and timely access to actionable business insights.
Operational contribution:
• Work closely with the system, network and desktop engineers as well as service desk agents to provide technical support on the various server and database platforms. This includes new solutions as well as modifications to existing database systems and solutions.
• Documenting and reviewing database based solutions in these various areas.
• Engage with the systems, network, desktop engineers and service desk agents to monitor, diagnose and resolve 3rd level database related issues and incidents.
• Participate in the primary analysis and resolution of database related problems and requests.
• Responsible along with the bigger DBA team for resolving and escalating any DBMS issues as per agreed Service Level Agreements.
• Participate in the performance monitoring, trend analysis and advanced troubleshooting on various database environments in the organization.
• Ensure that all database-based systems operate to agreed service levels. This includes proactive and reactive monitoring and problem solving, analysis and maintenance of the database infrastructure.
• Manage the day-to-day operations of database environments by monitoring and signing off on system performance, configuration, maintenance and repair.
• Develop procedures to maintain security and protect systems from unauthorized use, acts of nature and user abuse.
• Develop and coordinate project directions and schedules to maximize benefits and minimize impacts on the customer organizations.
• Monitor DBMS capacity and initiates actions to resolve any shortfalls according to agreed procedures.
• Ensure that services and components continuously meet their agreed performance targets and service levels.
• Investigating any database breaches of availability targets and service non-availability, and initiating remedial action
• Identifies potential risk events, quantifying and documenting the probability of occurrence and impact on the business.
• Create and maintain a Standard Operational Procedure manual
• Performs administration and operations functions in accordance with standards, policies, and procedures
• Identify, escalate and implement activities to mitigate operational risks in the DBMS space.
• Manage, maintain and report on all DBMS Licencing and capacity.

• Identify organizational security flaws in the protection of sensitive information through comprehensive auditing capabilities
• Collaborate with the security operations team in the effort of securing all DBMS in the Group.
Human Resource Management:
• Supervision, coordination and mentorship of team members in the Database administration team.
• Effectively involve team members in efficient and effective problem resolution within a team atmosphere.
• Provide guidance and mentoring to less experienced team members
• Compile, update and actively manage issue lists and ensure that issues are resolved to the satisfaction of business users within a reasonable time
• Identify training and development needs of team members and formulate appropriate plans in the DBMS space.

Minimum requirements
QUALIFICATIONS:
• Degree / Diploma in IT
• MCDBA Certifications / MCITP Certifications
• Experience with other DBMS (MySQL, Mongo DB, Oracle, PostgreSQL)
• ITIL foundation certification an advantage
• Experience with database servers in a virtualized environment
